(Academic Year 2016-17)


Our College founded by the renowned scholar and social reformer Punnasseri Sri.
Neelakanta Sharma is now one of the few special grade colleges in the state. The College,
accredited at A grade by NAAC, has been recognized as the centre of excellence in higher
education. Presently, the College is functioning with 11 under graduate and 6 post graduate
programmes along with 4 research departments. The college has 85 members in the teaching
departments and 41 in the ministerial pool. The student strength of the college is 1526 out of
which 84% are girls. They are excelling in the field of academics, culture, arts, sports and other
extensive works. The college Union Election was conducted in a very peaceful atmosphere and
Sri. Aju T G, Assistant Professor of Physical Education, discharged the duties of returning officer
successfully. Sri. K B Roy, Assistant Professor of Chemistry has been nominated as the staff
advisor to the College Union. Sri. Alikkutty C, Assistant Professor of Malayalam and Sri.
Sivasankar S, Assistant Professor of English have been nominated as the staff editor and fine arts
advisor respectively. We have an excellent team of faculties with dedicated teaching and research
commitments. Construction work of science block commenced during the year. The work is
expected to be complete shortly. New administrative block of the College was inaugurated by
Honarable Chief Minister Sri. Pinarayi Vijayan. The college is trying to add many more courses
to its portfolio with stress on MSc Zoology and BSc Mathematics.


Research department of Chemistry is actively involved in teaching and research. A major
and two minor research projects are ongoing with Dr Binitha N and Smt Anjaly Mathew and Mr
Roy K B respectively as the principal investigators. Dr Resmi M R has completed her major
project and Smt Remani K C and Smt Usha M have completed their minor projects. The
department could make four international publications in the year. 3 of the top ten ranks in the
University MSc exams were grabbed by the students from the department. Two students
qualified NET during the year and one research scholar secured KSCSTE research scholarship.
Kum. Arya of 1st BSc Chemistry won the award for best actress in the University interzone
drama competition.


Research Department of Botany started the academic year with the establishment of
Nature Appreciation Centre (Kuttivanam) in college campus. There was an invited talk by the
state coordinator of WWF and a workshop on bird watching. Establishment of a butterfly garden
in the campus and a science exhibition for students of AMUP School Pattambi were other two
programmes organized by the department. The first year MSc students were taken for a field visit
to Kadalundi bird sanctuary and conservation activities were done at the mangrove ecosystem.
The department conducted two workshops. The first one was on ‘Flipped Learning and
Reflective Journal’ for college teachers and the second one was on ‘Tools and Techniques in
Biotechnology’ for higher secondary school teachers. One student of the department secured 1st
rank in University MSc examination and two students each qualified CSIR- (UGC) JRF and
CSIR-NET.


Department of Commerce is the largest department in the college with two
undergraduate programme, BBA and BCom and one Post graduate programme, MCom. The
department claims a very good academic record and rating in the results of the students in the
university examinations. It has secured 100% pass in all the three programmes offered. 14
students from the department were awarded with ranks ranging from 1 to 10 in the University
examinations of which two students, Indu NR (MCom) and Revathy N (BBA), held first rank. Dr
M. B. Bindu Menon, Assistant Professor of the department was awarded PhD this year from the
Mahathma Gandhi University, Kottayam. The department conducted a two day national seminar.
Many of the faculties attended and presented papers in various national and international seminars and
workshops.


Department of Economics conducted various programmes during the year to raise the
academic standard of faculties and students. An inter-collegiate quiz competition was organized
in connection with world population day. 13 teams from different colleges participated in the
programme. One minor research project is ongoing in the department with Smt. Raseena K K,
Assistant Professor as the principal investigator. Many of the faculties attended and presented papers
in various national and international seminars and workshops and were also invited resource persons in
some of them. Two students from the department, Smt. Remya R and Sri. Sajith, secured UGC-NET
during the academic year.


Research Department of Malayalam conducted many fruitful academic programmes during the
year. Presentation and discussion of the research thesis of Dr P P Prakasan, Assistant Professor was
followed by a workshop on Koodiyattam which also involved stage performance of the art form. A debate
on, ‘Right to life of transgender – Identity, Liberty and Justice’ was also organized by the department.
Anoop memorial collegiate award-2016 for best story was conferred on Sri. Sajeev N U.
Jadayuvadhangam koodiyattam performance was done by Mayaraman. The programmes also marked by
a debate by G Dileepan on the contemporaneity of aattams and aascharyachoodamni lecture
demonstration by Padmasree Kalamandalam Sivan Namboothiri. Second edition of Kavithayude
Carnival was organized by the department on a much larger scale than the inaugural edition. Workshop
on translation, exhibition, presentation, seminar, debate, publication, felicitation of senior poet and
recitation of poems were the different programmes under the carnival. The programme was noted for its
massive participation. Around 1500 critics, academicians and practitioners different parts of the country
attended the programme. D Vinayachandran memorial recitation competition, presentation and
demonstration of Nangiarkooth by Kalamandalam Santhi and Marar memorial were the other notable
programmes of the department. The department started publication of a research magazine titled Irayam.
Two research scholars of the department submitted their thesis during the year and Sri H K Santhosh and
Smt K V Manjula were awarded with doctorate and guideship respectively.


Research Department of Sanskrit is the parent department of the college with one
undergraduate degree programme and one Post Graduate programme. The department claims a
very good academic record and rating in the results of the students in the university
examinations. The students have secured 100% pass in both UG and PG programmes. This year
the department conducted a two-day national seminar with Dr Dharmaraj Adat, Pro-Vice
Chancellor, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady as the chief guest. A two day
national workshop and a one day commemoration lecture in the name of former principal Dr
Venkitakrishnan were the other notable programmes conducted by the department during the
year. Many of the faculties attended and presented papers in various national and international seminars
and workshops and were also invited resource persons in some seminars.


The department of Arabic organized an Alumni meet during the year and felicitated outstanding
performance in University examinations. The department conducted a three day workshop on the
Current Trends and Techniques of Translation – English and Arabic and a national seminar on
‘Local Contribution to the Poetry of Arabic’. It also observed the world Arabic day with
programmes of academic significance. The department held a community extension program
under the banner of awareness about the welfare schemes under the government and the
procedures to avail it. It also had the good fortune of welcoming official guest from the Kingdom
of Saudi Arabia to the College.


The Department of English conducted a two day national seminar on ‘Nation, Body and
Performance’, which was noted for the presence of Prof A K Rmakrishnan of Jawhar Lal Nehru
University. The department in co-operation with the department of History also organized a talk titled
‘Youth and Media’ in connection with the Punnasseri day.


Department of Physics is the youngest department in the college. Dr Venugopal E,
Assistant Professor of Physics, was awarded PhD during the year from CSIR-National Chemical
Laboratory, Pune. Department student secured third rank in the University UG examination and
one student secured high rank in JAM 2107. Faculty of the department has attended various
national and seminars during the year.


The department of Zoology conducted a two day – workshop on Bioinformatics.
Teachers of the department participated National Seminars conducted by various colleges in the
state in the months of December 2016 and January 2017. Our students, Haritha Raveendran and
Shivapriya of Second semester B. Sc. Zoology won the First Prize for Ever-rolling trophy in the
inter-collegiate quiz competition conducted by N. S. S. College Ottappalam in connection with
Science Day celebration on 24-2-2017.


The department of physical education made its presence felt by securing top places in
many competitions. Gokul secured first prize in inter-zone Kalaripayattu. Jinan Muhammed was
selected to the Calicut University Gymnastics team while Jisha and Anjana N T were selected to
University women cricket team.


The NCC unit, commanded by Abdu P, Assistant professor of Arabic, in the college is
functioning under the 28 Bn. NCC Ottappalam and has 160 cadets of which 80% are girls. The
unit got special appreciation from the Chief Minister on the occasion of the inauguration of the
new administrative block. The unit celebrated Swachh Bharath, International Yoga day, NCC day
and environment day in a befitting manner. The cadets made a visit to Abhayam, an old age
home, and spent a day with them.


The entrepreneurship development club is functioning in the college with Kum. Sreeja
P as the coordinator. The club conducted two one day induction Programmes on Entrepreneurial
Development for its member students. The club arranged a food fest consisting of 57 stalls.
Discussion with successful entrepreneurs, inter-departmental programmes and industrial visits
were the other programmes organized by the Club. Members made 250 environment friendly file
and supplied to different departments of the college.


A fully fledged IQAC is there in the college with Dr Santhosh H K, Assistant Professor
of Malayalam as the co-ordinator and Sri Roy K B, Assistant Professor of Chemistry as assistant
co-ordinator. IQAC is in the process of making annual quality assurance report which is to be
sent to NAAC. It organized a work shop on flipped learning process for the benefit of the
faculties of the institution.


The three new initiatives WWS, ASAP and SSP, a joint venture of DCE, higher
education department and Government of Kerala, are functioning at their best in the college with
Dr P N Rajesh, Assistant Professor of Economics, Sri V K Muralidharan, Assistant Professor of
Commerce and Smt Raseena K K, Assistant Professor of Economics as coordinators respectively.
Sri Pramod, Assistant Professor of commerce is in charge of the Bhoomitrasena club and the
Econ club and Smt Anjali Mathew, Assistant Professor of Chemistry is in charge of the Music
club. The college is also having other organized units like the Nature club and Women
development cell with Dr Maju and Dr Thanuja as the coordinators respectively.


PTA is the livewire of the college. Its role in the overall development of the college is
worthy of special mention. Our PTA is providing financial assistance to the office, union
activities and National Service Schemes as and when necessary. PTA coordinated all the
activities leading to the inauguration of the administrative block. A watchman was appointed by
the PTA during the year. It continues to offer free computer classes to first year UG students.
Infrastructural inadequacies created by the massive increase in UG and PG seats by the
University were handled smoothly with the timely assistance of PTA.


I gratefully acknowledge the sincere and whole hearted efforts of PTA secretary Smt. P K
Prasanna, Associate Professor of Economics, and other members of PTA.
I express my deep sense of gratitude to Vice Principal, Sri. Punnoos Jacob, staff advisor
Sri. K B Roy, Discipline committee convenor Smt. P K Prasanna, Senior Supnd. Sri. A P

institution.
