ANNUAL REPORT (ACADEMIC YEAR 2016-2017)

 

ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE

The organizing committee of the Nature Club for the academic year has been constituted
as follows.

Prasanna PK, Sri. Alikutty V, Sri. Aju and Sri. Sivasankar S (Faculties),
Laiju CK and Sneha U (Student representatives) and Smt. Prasanna
PK (PTA member).

Invitees :  KSBB District Coordinator, Local Forest Officer and Local
Agricultural Officer.

Club Members
Nature Club members were selected from all classes in a representative manner.

Nature Club Activities

*   Special days with nature and conservational aspects are celebrated by exhibiting relevant
articles, cartoons paper cuttings drawings etc. on Nature Club notice board. This was very
much effective in creating awareness of conservation among students.

* Butterfly garden in college campus. Butterfly garden with many honey and host plants
were made in our campus in collaboration with Botany Department. Plants for the garden are collected and planted by nature club members. The garden provided a good pasturefor various butterflies of the campus.

*A class on Bird Watching has been conducted in collaboration with WWF_India & Botany
Department on 02-03-2017 at the edusat room. Technical sessions were handled by Mr. AK
Sivakumar, Senior Education Officer, WWF-India, Kerala State Office. He took class on the
following two sessions.

Session I: 9.45 AM. A talk on Bird watching and ebirding and
Session II: 11.30 AM. Talk on Common birds of Kerala.

A bird watching club is initiated in our campus. Our campus area with Kuttivanam,
Biodiversity park and area of the college quarters’ area, all filled with trees & bushes,
provided a good natural habitat for various birds. Many rare birds including Hornbill have
been reported from our campus.

* World Wetlands Day is celebrated on the second day of February every year to raise global
awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and our planet. Twelve members of
nature club and two teachers of botany department visited mangrove wet land at Kadalundi
(Kadalundi- Vallikkunnu community reserve) as part of wet land day celebration on 11th
February 2017. They observed and understood the significance of mangrove wet land area.
They actively participated in cleaning the premises of the mangrove area.

* Birdbaths are made in four locations in our campus. It was very much helpful in area like
Pattambi where water scarcity is very high and it would provide water to birds. Having a
birdbath is an advantage to students who enjoys observing nature in general and bird
behavior in particular.

Nature Club Activities
*   Nature Club of SNGS College participated in the first Odonate survey conducted at Periyar
Tiger Reserve from 27th to 29th October 2017. This survey was conducted by Indian
Dragonfly Society in collaboration with Kerala Forest Department. Nature club coordinator
and three volunteers of our club successfully participated in the three day survey
conducted at the PTR.

 

* Exhibitions, cartoons, poster presentations, collashs etc on Nature Club notice boar
in connection with special days with nature and conservational importance. This was
very much effective in creating awareness of conservation among students.

  • Campus cleaning. Campus cleaning was done by nature club members.
  • URJAKIRAN 2017 Programme
    ‘Urjakiran’ is an Energy Conservation Awareness Campaign by Energy Management
    Centre, Govt. of Kerala implemented by Centre for Environment & Development and WWF-India, Kerala State Office. Nature Club of SNGS College in connection with WWFIndia,Kerala conducted the progamme in Pattambi and it included a formal inaugural session, awareness class, activity session, placard making (for the rally). The awareness class were taken by Mr. AK Sivakumar, Senior Education Officer, WWF-India, Kerala State Office and Mr. Murugan P (WWF volunteer). Rally was by nature club memebers done on
    13th Dec 2017 from SNGS College to pattambi town with prepared placard for creating awareness of the need for energy conservation.
  • Nature Club Activites in Sasthrayan 2018
    Nature Club of our college organized photo exhibitions, awareness programmes,
    exhibition of non timber forest products and quiz competition for students and publics.
    The followings are the various activities for Sasthrayan 2018.

2. Photo exhibition of various Flagship and Keystone species.
Photos of various flagship species and keystone species with their common name and
scientific name were exhibited. This gave a facility to clearly understand various Flagship and
Keystone species of Kerala.

3. Quiz competition
A quiz competition was conducted as part of the Sasthrayan 2018 and the question were
related to wild life and its conservation. It got great appreciation and participation from students
and teachers. Students they showed excellence were appreciated by giving pencil as
reinforcement.

4. Energy Conservation Awareness Programmme
‘Urjakiran’ (an Energy Conservation Awareness Campaign by Energy Management
Centre, Govt. of Kerala) conducted in connection with WWF-India, Kerala Chapter in our
college. Photo and chart prepared by Nature Club members in connection with Urjakiran were
exhibited in the Sasthrayan 2018. It is useful in creating awareness of energy conservation
and various strategies for conservation of energy.

5. Display of various Non Timber Forest Products (NTFP).
We exhibited various products obtained from forest and it facilitated an opportunity to see
and experience various forest rare products.
