(Academic Year 2015-16)

                  Respected guests, dear colleagues and beloved students, I have great pleasure to present before you a brief report of the activities of our college during the academic year 2015-16. Our college founded by the renowned scholar and social reformer Punnasseri Sree Neelakanta Sharma is now one among the six special grade Colleges. The college, which is accredited by NAAC at A level, has been recognized as the centre of excellence in the field of higher education in the state. Now the college is functioning with 11 under graduate and 6 post graduate programme along with 4 research departments. The college has 79 members in the teaching staff and 41 members in the ministerial pool. The student strength of the college is 1401 out of which 84% are girls. They are excelling in academics, Cultural activities, Sports, and other extensive works.  College Union Election was conducted in a very peaceful atmosphere and Sri C.V.Prasad, Assistant Professor of commerce discharged the duties of Returning Officer very successfully.  Sri K.B.Roy, Assistant Professor of chemistry has been nominated as the staff adviser to the college union. Sri.Alikutty.C Asst.Prof.of Malayalam has been nominated as the staff editor and Smt. Sharmila.k. Thankappan, Asst.Prof.of Sanskrit as fine arts adviser. We have an excellent team of faculties with dedicated teaching and research commitments.

       In the department of Chemistry one major research project for an amount of Rs. 31, 45,600/- under Science Research Scheme Programme of the KSCSTE is ongoing with faculty member Dr.Resmi.M.R as the Principal Investigator. Three UGC Minor Research Projects are ongoing in the department with the faculty members Dr. Resmi.M.R, Smt.Usha.M and Smt.Remani.K.C as the principal Investigators. Department of Chemistry has organized a Two Day Workshop on Computational Quantum Chemistry, sponsored by Collegiate Education Department. Faculty members Dr. Binitha N and Dr. Resmi M R had published 2 papers in international journals in the year 2015 – 2016. Various faculty members and research scholars of the department had presented papers in the national seminars. The department had organized Punnassery Memorial Talk with financial assistance from PTA.

            PG and Research Department of Botany conducted excellent teaching learning activities during this academic year, using innovative teaching methods. Department has conducted two day UGC sponsored National seminar and a two day state level seminar funded by directorate of collegiate education. Biodiversity club and College beautification committee are led by the Department of Botany. As a programme of Biodiversity club, an area in the college campus was identified and protected as “shanthi sthal”, meant for diversity and conservation of rare and botanically important plants. “Nakshatra vanam” was established in our botanical garden in collaboration with Kerala Forest Department. Faculties of the department have participated in various competence building programmes such as seminars, workshops and FLAIR programmes. Two of the faculties of the department Dr. Vivek P.J, and Dr. Resmi M.S. had successfully completed one month international internship in the University of Derby in UK in the prestigious flair programme of the Govt of kerala. Faculties and students of the department have been actively participating in research work and have two research articles in international journals. Department has conducted extension activities such as mushroom cultivation and plant identification.

Department of zoology has conducted a UGC sponsored two day national seminar and as part of the UGC extension programme, the Department has been doing a health survey of life style diseases with special reference to cardio vascular and diabetics among the people living in the Pattambi municipality. As a part of association activity, all science departments including department of zoology organized a science day. Fourth semester B.sc zoology students, karthika P.P and Arya.S.Babu participated in the state level quiz programme and won fourth place.

The department of physics has conducted an outreach programme for the public and school students for creating scientific awareness in connection with science day celebration. An invited lecture was done by Prof. Pappootty which was followed by a sky watch programme. There are remarkable participation of students both in arts and sports in the zonal and inter zone levels. Mr. Venugopal.V, head of the department of physics has submitted PhD thesis to the Academy of Scientific and innovative research New Delhi.

Department of statistics held a two day work shop on data analysis based on SPSS for the students as well as the research scholars

Department of Mathematics organized a Vedic mathematics class which was highly useful especially to the students with no mathematical background. The department also conducted a programme to improve the mathematical skills of the students to enable them to excel in competitive examinations. The students perform consistently well in the university examinations in the papers offered by the department.

Department of Commerce is functioning with two undergraduate degree programmes, B.Com & BBA and one PG programme. The department claims a very good academic record and rating in the results of the students in the university examinations. It has 100% pass in M.com, B.com and BBA during the last year. Department conducted a two day DC sponsored national seminar and a two day UGC sponsored practical training in Spreadsheet and Database Applications for the M.Com students. The annual Punnassery memorial talk was also conducted. In addition to this, the department has undertaken an extension programme to give training to the members of the Kudumbasree units of Pattambi Municipality.  Kumari Amritha of 4th semester BBA was selected as the best actor in Malayalam drama in the A zone festival. Smt.Bindu Menon M.P, faculty of the Department has submitted her PhD thesis.

The Department of Economics conducted various academic and non-academic programmes during this year to hone student skills. In connection with the world population day, the department organised an exhibition and a lecture on the strength and challenges of rising population. The Department conducted a DC sponsored National Seminar, and a two day workshop on research methodology in connection with the UGC sponsored educational innovation programme.  The Department organised extension programmes like orphanage visit, public talk and street play on environmental issues. The Department also arranged programmes for the teachers to equip them with innovative teaching skills. Rohini and Shahida of the second MA Economics batch secured 4th place (out of 18 Colleges) in an Economics quiz competition conducted at GVC Palakkad. Vishnulal of the Second year BA Economics was selected as the best actor in Hindi drama at A zone competition. Neeraj of the first year BA Economics was selected as the best actor in Malayalam drama and secured 3rd prize for Malayalam elocution in the same zonal level competition. The college cricket team which secured second place at zonal level is captained by Muhammed Shabeer of third year BA Economics.

            Department of history organized a one Day seminar on “Resistance Literature in Colonial Malabar. Department also conducted a Quiz Competition in Connection with “Quit India Day. In collaboration with Political Science Department a talk was conducted on “the life of marginalized: some North Indian Experiences” which was handled by famous social activist Dayabai. Department also organized a workshop on research methodology.

The P.G and research department of Sanskrit claims a very good academic record and rating in the results of the students in the university examinations. It has a 100% pass for both M.A. and B.A programme. The alumina meeting of the B.A. batch of 1970–73 was held in which a memorial talk on ‘Prof. S. Venkatakrishnan- the first Principal’ of the college, was made.  M.P. Sankunni Nair Memorial Talk was also conducted. The department organised a two-day DC sponsored national seminar and a two-day workshop on Koodiyattam utilizing the UGC fund. The annual Punnassery Memorial talk was conducted jointly with the PTA. Many of the faculties presented papers in various national and international seminars and workshops. Many research papers were published by the faculties.   Sri U. M. Hareesh of IVth Semester M.A. has won the second prize in Sanskrit elocution and the third prize in Sanskrit Essay Writing Competitions in the A -Zone Arts Festival. Sri Devanarayanan Potti & Kumari K. B. Amrita of the IVth semester B. A. have acted both in the Malayalam and Hindi dramas of the A – Zone fest which have been rated first and second dramas respectively in the university A zone  festival.

            The Department of Malayalam had a fruitful academic year during 15-16. Department organized a three day National Seminar on the History of  Malayalam Poetry funded by UGC and a three day workshop on Research Methodology in Malayalam which was funded by the Collegiate Education department. As a part of competency building  programmes under UGC, Department had conducted a 30 days long coaching in Malayalam Unicode Typesetting and Designing and  a short term Intensive Training for  HSA Malayalam PSC Examination. The department held D.Vinayachandran memorial talk, and a story writing competition for the students under Calicut University in memory of Anoop, a famous writer and a former student of the department. Department hosted   a two day workshop on Light designing in Traditional Theater and a series of performance of Koodiyattom in collaboration with Ekalochanam, a cultural organization. Department celebrated the world Mother tongue day and the World Environmental Day.  Irayam, a reading space, exclusively for periodicals and new books started functioning inside the department. Sri Santhosh.H.K, Sri P.P.prakasan, and Smt. Kala.B, faculties of the department have submitted their PhD thesis. Sri Santhosh H.K serves as the web site administrator of the college

The department of English conducted a two day UGC sponsored national seminar in which 7 academicians from various colleges delivered lecture and 15 teachers from various colleges presented papers. The department also organized a work shop on research methodology and a lecture demonstration with Macbeth cholliyattom for the students of all language departments. A lecture on Indian Aesthetics was delivered by Dr. Sathyan.M Asst. Prof. of Sanskrit. As a part of the extension activity the department provided a one month long P.S.C coaching for the nearby students.

The department of Arabic secured 100% passes for their first batch of students. They organised a 3 day national work shop, sponsored by the directorate of collegiate education and a one day UGC sponsored workshop. The generation meet ‘Thalamura sangamam’ organized by the department was inaugurated by the honourable minister of Public Works Sri V.K.Ibrahim kunju. International Arabic day was celebrated in a colourful manner by the department. Under UGC competency building programme they organized two days intensive training programme to improve the communicative skill of the students. As part of the educative innovative programme the department has started collection of Arabic scholastic heritage in old Valluvanad taluk.

The department of Hindi conducted a two day National seminar sponsored by Directorate of Collegiate Education which was inaugurated by Dr.A.Aravindakshan, Former Pro Vice-Chancellor of Inter National Hindi University, Wardha. In connection with Hindi Day celebrations various Hindi literary competitions were held. Faculty of the department, Dr.Prathibha, presented papers at various national as well as international seminars and also published an article.

Physical Education Department had a very promising year with regard to the participation and performance of the students in various intercollegiate events. Our cricket team and football team qualified for the inter zone championship. Jisha of 6th semester Bcom, Anjana of 4th semester Sanskrit and Salini of 4th semester Botany were selected to Calicut University Cricket team. Sanal Kumar T.S of 6th semester Botany secured a place in the Calicut University Gymnastic team. Our students performed well in the gymnastic men and kalaripayattu men and women championship. Our college hosted inter collegiate C zone men cricket tournament and inter zone women cricket tournament.

The NCC unit of the college with Lt P.Abdu as the Associate NCC officer is the pride of the institution. Our cadets have gone forward imbibing the spirit of nationalism patriotism and personality development. Besides regular parade a ten day annual training camp of 28 kerala NCC ottapalam, and a mini special weapon training camp were conducted in the college. Senior under officer Sajumon.P.K, cadets Shijila.K, Vishag.K.S, Bijesh.P.P, Gopika, Sneha.E.S, Suma T.M, and Salmanual Faris attended camps in and outside Kerala. Our cadet Vidya.M of sixth semester BBA completed para jumping course at Agra and Sreelakshmi.T of fourth semester Malayalam took part in the republic day parade at Delhi.

Commendable services were being done by the 2 NSS units of the college with Sri C.V Prasad asst.Prof. of Commerce, and Sri.Anil Kumar.M.R. Asst.Prof. of Malayalam as the programme officers. Volunteers observed world environmental day, world plastic carry bag free day, Independence Day, human rights day, world aids day, Gandhi Jayanhi, Republic day and NSS day. They conducted a blood donation camp where 50 volunteers donated blood.  A special programme was arranged to provide moral support and motivation to paraplegic patients. The seven day special camp was held at Govt L.P.School Parathur with the participation of 100 volunteers.

Career guidance and placement cell is an integral part of the college and has been organizing different activities under the guidance of. Dr. Manoj T.P.Asst.Prof.of Chemistry. The cell conducted UGC NET coaching for the Post graduate students and “Career Advancement Training” for the bachelor degree students. It also arranged a pre-placement talk by Embics Technologies Pvt Ltd.Ten students got selection in the Campus interview for different posts, conducted by Eureka Forbs, Cochin

Women cell and women development cell is functioning in the college with the objective of enhancing self esteem and self confidence among girls. Dr. Prathibha H.O.D. Hindi department and Dr.Amala, H.O.D. Sanskrit department are the coordinators of the cells respectively. They jointly conducted awareness class, yoga Training Class, counseling class and various personality development programmes. A UGC sponsored training programme was conducted for preparing the students for competitive examinations. A Food Festival was held in the campus and the profit earned from the festival was used to distribute text books for the poor students of all the departments. Cells jointly celebrated women’s day on March 8th.

The entrepreneurial development club is reconstituted in the college with Ms. Sreeja Asst. Prof. of Commerce as the coordintor and JunaidAli sixth semester BBA and Muhammd Fasil.K.P sixth semester Bcom as student co ordinators. Formal inauguration is marked by a talk on entrepreneurial development by DIC officials. The club provided a five day training programme to produce small scale industrial products. Club also arranged “creativa” an exhibition cum sale of the products produced by the club members to spread the message of earning while learning.

Nature club is working in the college with Dr Maju, Asst.Prof of Botany as the coordinator. Club organized Energy conservation programme called URJA KIRAN in collaboration with WWF India.  On the important days with biological and conservational aspects, Nature Club displayed relevant paper cutting, drawings, cartoons etc to create awareness of nature conservation among the students.

The 3 new initiatives WWS, ASAP, and SSP a joint venture of DCE, Higher Education dept and government of Kerala is functioning in its best level in the college with Dr. P.N Rajesh Asst.Prof. of Economics, Sri V.K.Muraleedharan, Asst.Prof.of Commerce, and Smt.Raseena, Asst.Prof. of Economics as coordinators respectively.

Sri Pramod Assistant Professor of commerce is in charge of the Encon Club and Bhoomithrasena club and Anjali Mathew, Asst.Prof. Of Chemistry is in charge of the music club.

A full-fledged IQAC is there in the college with Dr N. K. Babu, Assistant Professor of Commerce as the coordinator and Sri K.B Roy as assistant coordinator.  IQAC is in the process of making annual quality assurance report which is to be forwarded to the NAAC.

I have to specially mention the role played by PTA in the overall development of the college. Our PTA is providing financial assistance to the office, union activities and National service Scheme as and when necessary. It provides free computer training to the first year students. With the persistent efforts of the PTA to solve the acute water shortage in the campus college got permission from the registrar of agricultural university to construct an open well in the land owned by RARS, Pattambi. The inauguration of the construction work of the 33 crores worth science block was done by Sri Umman Chandy, the honorable Chief Minister of Kerala. PTA played a lead role in making the inaugural function a grand success. It also organised the Punnasseri Memorial lectures in association with various departments.

Raghunathan, College union office bearers and each and every one of my colleagues and my students for the valuable help and moral support extended to me for the smooth conduct of the institution.
