The Department of Chemistry had a humble beginning in 1967 when the college started offering physical sciences as optional subjects at the erstwhilepre-degree classes. The Department had a systematic growth as evidenced from the fact that B.Sc was launched in 1974 and M.Sc in 1982. University of Calicut recognized the Department as one of its research center in 2012.
Department of Chemistry has received FIST fund from the Department of Science and Technology (DST). Various other government funding agencies viz. UGC, DST, KSCSTE have also given funds for execution of their projects.More than Rs. 75 lakhs project funding secured for the department in the last few years.
At present, the department has nine faculty members and four non-teaching staff. About 78% of the permanent faculty hold doctoral degrees, and two faculty members are recognised Research Guides of the University of Calicut.
