
The history of Malayalam dates back as back to 1911, the very beginning of the college. Among the first courses offered was Malayalam Vidwan, though it was long before the course was renamed and formalized into an undergraduate programme in 1966. Postgraduate programme was launched in less than two years, in 1968, and the department was bestowed with the status of a research center in 1977. Department is recognised as the Centre of Excellence by Collegiate Education Department.
While preserving its rich legacy from its early years, the department continues to progress by integrating innovative approaches and modern technology into language teaching, as well as into language and literary research. The department has seven permanent faculty members and one guest faculty member. In addition, eight research supervisors from other colleges guide scholars associated with the department.With the faculty members and an inexhaustible synergetic strength, the department is right in front of every facet of the college. As both students and faculty actively participate in the day-to-day affairs of the college and in various club activities, the Department of Malayalam continues to remain a vibrant and influential presence within the college community.
As a recognized research centre, with around forty research scholars currently pursuing their studies. .Apart from research scholars, more than 250 students have chosen Malayalam as their optional subject.

Academic activities
The Department of Malayalam takes the lead in organizing a wide range of academic activities. Among these, the most prominent is the Carnival of Poetry, conducted by the department since 2015. The event has gained national recognition and has grown into a major cultural festival with financial support from the Department of Collegiate Education and the wholehearted cooperation of teachers, students, cultural activists, and the local community.
Every year, the Carnival features international seminars, workshops, book exhibitions, discussions, cultural performances, and art exhibitions centred on diverse themes. It attracts internationally acclaimed poets, thinkers, and artists from India and abroad. In addition to the Carnival, the department regularly organizes several other academic and cultural programmes.
Another significant academic initiative of the department is Irayam, a peer-reviewed online research journal published by the department.
The department also provides coaching for NET and JRF examinations under the guidance of its faculty members and distinguished academicians.
Training is likewise offered for various PSC examinations.
In addition, the department regularly conducts workshops for research scholars.
As part of the FYUGP curriculum, internship programmes are organized for selected students from different colleges.
Achievements
. The greatest strength of the department is its academically outstanding students. Every year, students of the Department of Malayalam secure several university ranks in the B.A. and M.A. examinations. They also achieve remarkable success in competitive examinations such as JRF, NET, SET, and KTET. In addition, students of the department have been awarded several prestigious scholarships, including the Chief Minister’s Higher Education Scholarship and the Aspire Scholarship.
Placement
. Students of the department have secured placements as teachers in colleges, higher secondary schools, high schools, LP and UP schools, as well as in various positions in government, aided, and unaided institutions, which is a matter of great pride.
Alumni
. Another notable achievement of the department is its strong alumni network, comprising distinguished personalities in the fields of society, culture, education, politics, and many other sectors.
