Sree Neelakanta Govt. Sanskrit College, one of the few special grade colleges in Kerala, has been recognized as the centre of excellence in higher education. It has also been accredited at A grade by NAAC.  The  College has 11 under graduate programmes, 7 post graduate programmes and four of the departments are recognized for conducting research programmes. The college has 85 faculty members in various teaching departments and 41 in administrative section and in the ministerial pool. The student strength of the college is 1594 in which 84% are girls in 2018 – 19. The college Union Election was conducted in a very peaceful atmosphere and Sri. Sasikumar.P, Assistant Professor of English, discharged the duties of returning officer. The College Union office bearers under the chairmanship of Mr. Sudheesh took oath on 07/09/2018. Ms Rajitha C R, Assistant Professor of Commerce, had been nominated as the staff advisor to the College Union. Smt. Kala B, Assistant Professor of Malayalam, and Smt. Sharmila K Thankappan, Assistant Professor of Sanskrit, had been nominated  as staff editor  and staff fine arts advisor respectively. Mr Kaladharan, Assistant Professor of Statistics, is CUCBCSS coordinator. We have an excellent team of faculties with dedicated teaching as well as research commitments. Mr Kaladharan has also taken charge as chief superintendent of Examinations and Dr Rajalakshmi as additional superintendent. Our science block is at its final stage of completion. We got permission to start MSc Zoology in 2018 – 19 academic year due to the great effort of  teachers and representatives of the people.  It is a great achievement that Dr Abdu. our NCC officer, has promoted to Captain from Lieutenant rank.

 

 

The Fourth Edition of Poetry Carnival, organized by Malayalam Department, received national attention and won accolades as it evolved into a stabilized format and content. This annual event has put  our institution  in the cultural geography of Kerala. The activities of Prof Narayanan Centre for Public Understanding of Science, a center for popularisation of science  in association with IIT Chennai, was inaugurated this year. Our college had a vital role in the conceptualization, planning and implementation of HSSTTP programme.

 

During the academic year of 2018-2019, the students of Malayalam Department proved their excellence by achieving the best results in UGC NET/JRF examinations and university examinations. 11 students qualified NET and 3 qualified JRF. Apart from this, among students of  online NET coaching, 27  got NET and 3 got JRF. For the MA Malayalam examinations out of the first seven ranks, all the six ranks except second rank were bagged by the students of Malayalam Department. The department has begun Kavya Paadasaala and the first class was taken by Balachandran Chullikkad. The Department of Malayalam and college Library together conducted one day workshop on Protection and Preservation of Manuscripts. A seven day certificate course on Research Methodology was co-ordinated by Malayalam Department along with the Sanskrit department. This year two Research scholars were awarded Ph.D and 8 new Research Scholars joined in the department.

 

Post graduate department of Chemistry has  organized a Two Day National Seminar on Recent Trends in Materials Science and Technology on 27th& 28thNovember 2018. The Department in collaboration with higher education department had conducted a 10 days HSST Teacher Transformation Programme. Department organized an add on course on computational chemistry which was coordinated by Roy.K.B. One major research project on “Graphene based materials for versatile organic transormations” is ongoing in the Department with Dr. Binitha N N as the Principal Investigator. Faculty members of the depsrtment delivered Invited Lectures in National Seminars, Orientation Programs and workshops. Sumayya P K and Neeshma M, our MSc Chemistry students, won the first rank, tenth rank respectively among the students of the affiliated colleges of University of Calicut in the year 2018. Our Faculty member Jincy EM has been awarded Ph.D in the year 2018. PhD was awarded to four of our research scholars in this academic year.

 

Department of Botany introduced innovative teaching strategies. Dr. Vivek P J.   implemented Flipped learning and Dr. Resmi M. S. introduced Reflective journal. The Department  conducted two day National seminar on “Plant microbe interactions’’ from December 5, 2018 to December 6, 2018 and a Seven-day National workshop on Research Methodology for Research scholars from January 28, 2019  to  February 3, 2019.  M Sc students of our Department bagged 1st,3rd,6th and 8th ranks among the students of the affiliated colleges of University of Calicut in the year 2018.

 

The Department of Economics organized an intercollegiate poster making competition on 11 th July 2018 in connection with World Population Day. A one day workshop on SPSS was also conducted. The Department conducted two day national seminar on the topic of Structural Transformation in Indian Economy : Trends, Patterns and Implications, which was inaugurated by Mr. M B Rajesh, MP.  A discussion  on budgets  were conducted during the presentation of state and union budget 2019 for PG and final year UG students. Three of our  students qualified  National Eligibility Test.  One of our UG student, Arjun Das, got International Chess FIDE  Rating and SaranyaDas got first position in Inter-zone  Wushu  competition.

 

Department of Commerce, the largest department in the college with 373 students in  2018-19, has 13 faculty members including Ph. D and M. Phil holders. All faculty members have representation in official bodies in various levels including State RUSA TSG and Board of Studies. The pass percentage in all UG and PG programs were 100% in the last year and 8 students got UGC – NET including JRF. Department conducted a National Workshop during the year. Department conducted UGC JRF/NET coaching and 20 students qualified in the last batch. The department has also organized some extension activities .

 

Department of Sanskrit conducted a Five day National Workshop from 29-10-2018 to  02-11-2018 on the topic Vyakthiviveka of Mahimabhatta. anda one day seminar on Manuscriptology collaborated with alumini 1970-73 batch on 25-11-2018. The department offered online UGC-NET coaching which was coordinated by Dr. Pushpadasan Kuniyil. The annual Punnassery Memmorial talk was delivered by Dr V.K.Vijayan, Campus  Director Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed University. The department  celebrated the Sanskrit Association Day of  very splendidly. All the student and teacher achievers of the department were felicitated in a programme arranged by the Association. The department conducted a book release function and a one day seminar on “Keraleeya Samskrtham Charitravum Varthamanavum” on 15-10-2018. Dr. M. Sathian and Dr. Pushpadasan Kuniyil got appointment as Associate Professors at Sreesankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady. Smt. Alaka got second rank in the B.A. Degree Examinations and  Smt  Rejitha  got first rank in the M.A. Examinations.

 

The Department of Zoology conducted several activities during the academic year 2018-19. The Department  organized two day workshop on ‘Molecular Techniques’ organized on 21 & 22 November 2018. We celebrated 1st February 2019 as’ Merit day’. On the occasion of Merit day, our department conducted a talk on’ Career and Academic guidance’ which was delivered by Basheerb Ahammed, retired Associate Professor from P.S.M.O College, Tirurangadi. The Department of Zoology also felicitated the students who excelled in curricular and extra-curricular activities. Mr. Karthik. R and Mohammed Sadique of IV semester B.Sc Zoology had participated in the inter-collegiate quiz competition organized by the department of Zoology N.S.S College Ottapalam on 5th February 2019 in connection with the Mannam Jayanthi celebrations.

 

Faculty member in Dept of Mathematics Beena P. participated in various national international level conferences and workshops. Department organized one day national workshop in La-Tex.

 

As a newly established Department, Physics Department has an excellent achievement in the academic level. Out of 25 Outgoing students 15 students got admission for M Sc Physics in various Govt and aided colleges. Nidhin Raj, Abhinand, and Sarath, final year students,  had won the first prize in the Inter zone Chess Competition of Calicut university.

 

Department of Arabic conducted , Guru vandanam’, as the part of National Teachers Day Celebrations, on 5th September 2018. The Department organized a one day help desk to assist the public to submit online application for Hajj 2019 and other social welfare schemes of government as the part community extension Programme, which was inaugurated by Mohamed  Muhsin MLA. The Department celebrated the academic year 2018-19 as the Golden jubilee year.  The  Prof. V.M Mohammed Ali Memorial Award was  presented to topper of department for the academic year 2017-18. The Department conducted a two day national workshop on the theme of “Components of Bilingual Proficiency in  Arabic and English ; a Practical Approach” on 30,31 October 2018. and celebrated the WORLD ARABIC DAY on 17, 18 December 2018 with various programs. The department conducted the closing ceremony of the celebrations of Golden jubilee Year which was inaugurated by Dr. K Mohammed Basheer, the Vice Chancellor of University of Calicut, who also released VEYILINTE PUSTHAKAM, an anthology of translated short stories from Arabic to Malayalam. Dr. CP Chithrabhanu, Syndicate Member, Malayalam University was present in that occasion.

 

Faculty members of Department of Statistics participated in various national international level conferences and workshops.  The faculty helped PG students in preparation for UGC- NET.  Sri Kaladharan P.V.  participated in 4 national level seminars and Dr.Sreedevi .E.P., participated in one international work shop and two national level workshops. A KSCSTE sponsored major research project is undergoing in the Department with Dr. Sreedevi.E.P as Principal Investigator.

 

The Department of English organized a two day national seminar on Theorizing Theory: Postmodern and After on 25th and 26thOctober 2018. Dr. Sherin. B.S,  the English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad inaugurated the seminar. Dr. Kunhammad.K.K, Head, Dept of studies in English, Kannur University, Dr.Lal.C.A, Associate Professor of English, School of Distance Education, University of Kerala,  Dr.Ajay S Sekhar Asst.Professor, Dept of English, SSUS Tirur Centre  participated in it. Faculty members of  Dept of English participated and presented papers in various national international  conferences and workshops.

 

Department of History started a Lecture Series in this academic year. The first lecture was delivered by Dr. Srividhya Vattarambath, Asst. Professor of History, Govt. College, Malappuram on Local History on 25/07/2018. Dr. Sudheerkumar. P delivered Two invited Lectures one at KKTM Govt. College, Pullut and  at Govt. College, Malappuram,  participated in a Seminar Conducted by the Govt. College, Malappuram  on 05/10/2018 and 12/09/2018 and  delivered a talk in the Department of Zoology of this college on the History of Cancer. He participated in the South Indian History Congress held at Osmania University Hyderabad and presented a paper on Kaeralolpathi: The Text and Many Readings on 09/02/2019. He chaired the Seminar conducted by the English Department on Theorizing Theory: Post Modern and after. He also served as the TSG member of RUSA. Haridasan.V chaired the work shop on Revisiting South Indian Studies conducted by the History Department of Victoria College, Palakkad on 25/10/2018. He also chaired  a session of the seminar conducted by the English Department of this college. He attended during this period the South Indian History Congress being held at the Osmania University, Hyderabad. He is currently the Joint Secretary of the prestigious organization.

 

Dr Prathibha, Department of Hindi, presented five papers in National seminars and one in internaional seminar, She attended a short-term course on ‘Woman Empowerment’ conducted by HRDC, University of Thiruvananthapuram from 19-12-2018 to 27-12-2018.

 

 

Dept of Physical Education has two faculty members. The departmenthosted various inter zone and other competitions. Our students excelled ina number of inter – University, University and zonal level competitions.

 

1 Coy. NCC  Unit of our college celebrated The world environment day on Jun 6 and  conducted a Yoga exhibition and training programme on International Yoga Day. The unit conducted a one day Seminar and an awareness class on the Drug Abuse on 26 July 2018. The Independence Day and Republic Day were celebrated under the NCC unit in a colorful way. On the 5th September 2018, a group of cadets visited Chengannoor, the flood affected area and participated in cleaning drive there.  On the 2nd October, As part of "Swachhta Hi Seva" the NCC unit organized  Mass Awareness Rally and Cleanliness Drive. The cadets Cleaned Taluk Hospital wards, premises, pain and palliative clinic and Pattambi Railway Station. On the same day, The Associate NCC Officer Lt. Dr. P. Abdu was promoted to Captain Rank. The unit honoured Dr. KT. Jaleel, Higher Education Minister of Kerala`on  26th October 2019  and Dr. K. Mohammed Basheer, the Vice Chancellor of Calicut University on 1st March 2019.On 22 November, in connection with  the NCC Day Celebration, the unit organized a blood donation camp.   As part of the Green Kerala Mission, the cadets engaged in the cleaning activities.

 

The activities of the NSS units 40 and 88 of our institution took a different dimension in this year. Other than celebrating days of national importance, the volunteers put their complete effort in helping the people of Kerala during the time of flood. Old students, former NSS Programme officers, former NSS Volunteers, Principal and teachers of the institution helped us collect all sorts of materials to make flood relief activities a success. The materials collected were distributed to the relief camps which were functioning at various parts of Pattambi. Chief Ministers Distress Relief Fund collection campaign was taken up by the volunteers and  collected an amount of Rs. 21,310. Days of national and international importance were observed and celebrated. Cleaning Campaigns taken up by the Units turned successful as these activities were extended to the society.  We contributed an amount of Rs. 5210 (Five thousand Two hundred and Ten) to the Palliative Care Unit, Pattambi.Our volunteers participated in the survey conducted by the Government of Kerala and ASAP for establishing Skill Villages in Palakkad.The NSS Special camp was conducted in the month of December at West Kodumunda G.H.S. As part of the special camp, two roads were constructed. The activities of SUCHITHWA MISSION was also incorporated in the Seven day camp and our NSS units installed 17 Pipe Compost in the Ward No. 7 of Parudoor Grama Panchayath.

 

Our students has actively involved in all extra curricular activities and we came second position in non stage events in A – Zone. Theatre club was invited to perform Keralam Samara Kavitha  in Thrissur as a special invitation from Sahitya Academy. Film club under the guidance of Mr. Alikkutti C had organized various activities including film festival.

 

 

            Counselling Cell Conducted an awareness  classes on “Stress Management” on 11-10-2018 and  ‘Precautions to be Taken During Train Journey’  on 02-11-2018.  To enhance the self esteem and self confidence of the students a discussion was conducted on 30-11-2018 on the topic ‘ Be-Positive’. It also conducted a talk on ‘Easy Exam’ on 11-02-2019 by Smt.Anupama, district Counsellor, Kudumbashree Snehitha Gender Help Desk and Reshma, Community Counsellor.

 

Library, a centre of information for the academic community of the College,  ensures fair access to knowledge to the academics on the campus. It has a vast collection of resources  which  includes 70244 books, 292 manuscripts on palm leaves, bound volumes of journals and special collections. During the financial year, 2935 books were purchased. Central Library subscribes 6 newspapers and 63 periodicals including national and international journals. Digital library has 10 computer terminals for accessing digital information. Our Library has Institutional membership with DELNET (Developing Library Network), N-List of INLIBNET and National Digital Library.   Institutional repository of the College is also developed using open source Software D-Space. A reprographic centre functioned with a Digital duplicator, overhead scanner and copier. The digitization process of manuscripts started during this year. College library celebrated reading day on 19.06.2018 with various programmes. College Library conducted a two-day National workshop on Plagiarism and reference management on 23rd and 24th October 2018.  It also conducted a one-day workshop on Manuscript Preservation  in association with Malayalam Department.  During this financial year Library utilized around forty lakhs rupees through RUSA and plan fund. These funds were utilized for the collection development, binding of books, renovation of the college library and setting of Digital Library and Reprographic Centre.

 

Entrepreneurial Development  club  conducted various programmes to mould young entrepreneurs and to instill confidence and self-assurance. ED Club conducted one day awareness programme On Entrepreneurial Development by Sri. Alex Chacko from Vidya Academy of Science & Technology, Thrissur on 25th September 2018, two day training programme on Soft skill Development on 19.12.2018 On 20th December 2018,  and anexhibition cum saleof the Products.  The club arranged a Food Fest – Kreativa  – 2k19  on 01.03.2019.  On 19th March 2019 ED Club arranged an Industrial Visit Programme for members of the Club. 

 

The support of PTA in the activities of this college is commendable.  It continues to offer free computer classes to first year UG students. Infrastructural inadequacies created by the massive increase in UG and PG seats by the University were handled smoothly with the timely assistance of PTA. The PTA has appointed a watchman and two staff in the computer centre. It also allowed to install a fence surrounding the college campus in order to secure it from encroachers. The body was also creatively involved in all activities of the college like the Association days, Arts day, Departmental seminars and Poetry Carnival.
